Full description: 1) Soil degradation and its impact on land use and food production 2) Soil and water pollutants (main forms and sources) 3) Pollutants cycling in environment and effects to human health 4) Law regulations regarding soil and water remediation 5) Remediation strategies 6) Water purification systems based in bio-wastes products 6) Soil amendments and adsorbents for the mitigation of toxic metal pollution of water and soil 7) Removal of Emerging Contaminants from water and soils by bio-wastes 8) GHG capture with organic wastes 9) Biochar as chemical compounds sorbent 10) Designing properties of bio-waste adsorbents
Bibliography: Hussain Ch., Hait S. 2022: Advanced Organic Waste Management: Sustainable Practices and Approaches - book Elsevier; 9780323857925
Learning outcomes: Students will get the knowledge of how to transfer bio-wastes to useful products and their environmental applications. They will get knowledge about main soil and water pollutants and possible use of bio-waste in water and soil remediation. Students will also get knowledge of how to design bio-waste materials for environmental purposes e.g. as adsorbing materials, gas capture filters, and soil additives
Assessment methods and assessment criteria: Final exam and project
